The Department of Agricultural Economics was established in 1995, with Dr. SiavashDehghanian as the head of the department. In the beginning, the department’s faculty included Dr. SiavashDehghanian (an Associate Professor at the time), Dr. Mahmoud Daneshvar-Kakhki (an Assistant Professor at the time), and NaserShahnoushi and MohammadRezaKohansal (Lecturers at the time). The heads of the Department of Agricultural Economics since its foundation and their appointment periods are as follows: Dr. SiavashDehghanian (1995-98), Dr. Mahmoud Daneshvar-Kakhki (1998-99), Dr. SiavashDehghanian (1999-2004), Dr. Mohammad Ghorbani (2004-2006), Dr. NaserShahnoushi (2006-2008), Dr. MohammadRezaKohansal (2008-2012), Dr. NaserShahnoushi (2012-2014), and Dr. ArashDourandish (2014-present).

After graduation,Dr. NaserShahnoushi and Dr. MohammadRezaKohansal began working full-time as Assistant Professors on the departments educational and research activities in 2000 and 2002, respectively.LeiliAbolhasanireceived a scholarship to study abroad from the department and began her activity as an Assistant Professor in 2013. HoseinMohammadi and ArashDourandish alsoreceived scholarships from the department in 1997 and have been working as Assistant Professors since their graduation in 2009. Dr. SiavashDehghanian retired in 2006 as a Full Professor, and Dr. Mohsen Tabaraee was promoted to Assistant Professor in the same year. In 2011, Dr. AlirezaKarbasi, and in 2014, Dr. Mohammad Sabouhi joined the department from Zabol University as Associate Professors.
Dr. Mohammad Ghorbani was promoted to FullProfessorin 2012. In 2013, Dr. Mahmoud Daneshvar-Kakhki and Dr. NaserShahnoushi, and in 2014, Dr. MohammadRezaKohansal were promoted to Full Professor.
The Department of Agricultural Economics currently has 10 faculty members; five hold the academic rank of Professor, one hold the academic rank of Associate Professor, and four hold the academic rank of Assistant Professor. The staff specialize in the four branches of Agricultural Development and Policy (3 staff), Agricultural Production Management (4 staff), Trade and Econometrics (1 staff), Agricultural Education and Advancement (1 staff).
The Department of Agricultural Economics of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad established its master’s program by admitting four students in 2005. Since 2008, graduate students have been admitted to and educated in two branches (i.e., Crop Production and Management, and Agricultural Development and Policy). Currently, an approximate number of 30 master’s students study in the mentioned branches, and 22 master’s students have graduated in the field of Agricultural Economics. Moreover, in 2014, authorization for two new branches (i.e., Field Crop Marketing, and Environmental and Natural Resource Economics) was granted, and students have also been admitted in these two branches since 2015.
The Department of Agricultural Economics began admitting doctoral students in 2012. Students at this level can continue their education in four branches, namely Agricultural Development and Policy, Production Economics and farm Management, Agricultural Marketing, and Environmental and Natural Resource Economics.

Similar to any other production activity, production in agriculture is a process, through which production resources are combined according to specific aims. The resulting products are directly or indirectly used to enhance man’s quality of life. Due to limitations and a paucity of production resources (fields, water, manpower, funds, and so on) in agriculture, it is necessary to train specialists who can use their knowledge and experience in the fields of “Agricultural Planning,” “Agricultural Production Economics,” and “Analysis of Agricultural Development Plans” to performactivities at different levels (national, inter-regional, and international).

2- Holding on-the-job training courses in the fields of Agricultural Economics with the aim of increasing the knowledge and skills of currently-employed agriculture experts
3- Compiling, supervising, and conducting research projects in the fields of Agricultural Economics
4- Offering consultation with regard to policy making and the planning of Agricultural Development projects

The Department of Agricultural Economics currently enjoys the following facilities:
1- Three computer labs, one for each academic level, containing more than 30 computers and seven laser printers. All computers are connected to the university high-speed Internet connection. Moreover, all the faculty members are in possession of a computer with a high-speed Internet connection and a laser printer in their office.
2- Teaching aids such as television sets, opaque projectors, overhead projectors, display boards, video projectors, and video recorders are available at the faculty, and are available for use when necessary.
3- Despite there being no technical library at the department, the central library of the university offers numeroustechnical titles in the field of Agricultural Economics and other related fields to both students and professors. Moreover, national and international specialized journals are accessible to students and professors.
