Until 1994, only general soil science and soil fertility courses were provided by the faculty members of the department for other educational groups, but with the approval of the undergraduate course in soil science by the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, from September 1994, the Department of Soil Science and Engineering with The admission of 25 undergraduate students started its activity in a specialized way. According to the existing potentials and facilities, the Department of Soil Science accepted students from 2000 at the master's level and from 2009 at the specialized doctorate level.
According to the potentials and capabilities available in the Department of Soil Science and Engineering of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, undergraduate students will acquire the following skills and abilities:

• Identifying the stages of origin, formation, evolution and transformation of soils.
• Identifying and classifying the types of soils that can be used in agriculture and preparing their maps.
• Identification of physical, chemical and biological factors affecting the growth and development of plants.
• Identification of physical, chemical and biological behavior of soils.
• Identification and management of soil fertility and plant nutrition.
• Identification and management of environmental pollutants in soil and water resources.
• Identification of effective factors in soil erosion and soil management and protection.

At the master's and doctoral level, students with the necessary expertise can manage research projects related to soil and environmental sciences.
